Paper Boy S3: What the 60 FPS E Ink Game Boy Emulator Actually Is

The Paper Boy S3 is an experimental retro-gaming project that turns M5Stack's PaperS3 E Ink development device into a playable Game Boy emulator. Calling it a "Game Boy clone" can create the wrong impression because it is not a newly designed cartridge-compatible handheld and does not reproduce original Game Boy hardware. What makes the project interesting is the unusual display technology: it demonstrates that an E Ink panel normally associated with static reading can be driven fast enough for approximately 60 FPS Game Boy emulation.

What the Paper Boy S3 Actually Is

Paper Boy S3 is built around the M5Stack PaperS3, a compact development platform equipped with an E Ink touchscreen and an ESP32-S3 microcontroller. The underlying device was created as a programmable development platform rather than as a dedicated gaming handheld.

The project modifies that hardware to run Game Boy software through emulation. This distinction matters because the resulting device does not contain the architecture of an original Nintendo Game Boy and was not designed around interchangeable Game Boy cartridges.

Describing Paper Boy S3 as an E Ink Game Boy emulator is more technically precise than describing it as a Game Boy clone. Its significance comes from repurposing unusual hardware rather than reproducing Nintendo's original console.

The Hardware Behind the Project

The M5Stack PaperS3 uses an ESP32-S3R8 dual-core microcontroller running at up to 240 MHz. It also includes 8 MB of PSRAM, 16 MB of flash storage and a microSD card interface.

The most important component for this experiment is its 4.7-inch E Ink display. The panel has a resolution of 960 × 540 pixels, supports grayscale output and includes a capacitive touchscreen.
